Bukit Harimau Menangis (Crying Tiger Hill) is a small hill and hiking spot in Kemasik, Terengganu. Some locals call it Bukit Pok Long. Unverified sources mentioned that the funny name Harimau Menangis came from local stories some time ago.
Here’s how the story goes: Once upon a time, there was a tribe of orang asli (indigenous) living on the hill. The Tok Batin (chieftain) had the predators in the area agree not to disturb the tribe. However, one of the 37 tigers had broken the agreement and chased one of the tribesmen. Upon admitting its fault, the tiger was seen being slapped by the Tok Batin and cries of a child were heard coming from the tiger.
Bukit Harimau Menangis
To hike Bukit Harimau Menangis, I parked my car at Taman Rekreasi ASFA Water Park free parking. You could take a swim here to cool off after the hike. Otherwise, you could also park outside near Bukit Harimau Menangis starting point.
11.39am: I walked back out to the road outside the water park parking area. The starting point is just to the right.
Spotted quite a few red ant nests along the way.
(+7)11.46am: Walk along the tarmac road until the water treatment plant gate. You will find the trailhead to Bukit Harimau Menangis. Opening hours: 6am to 7pm
Some steep and exposed (sun protection recommended) climb right at the start.
(+5)11.51am: The view of the water treatment plant.
More steep climbing.
(+5)11.56am: It’s a very short hike to Bukit Harimau Menangis peak.
The views from the peak. You could see some holiday homes, Kemasik river, and the ocean.
