Air Terjun Batu Bertenggek is a waterfall hiking trail about 1 hour and 15 minutes away from Kuala Lumpur, just a little further than Kuala Kubu Bharu. Permit and guide are not required to visit this waterfall.
Entry is free but there have been pressures to start charging visitors because some irresponsible people kept trashing the place. Piles of rubbish kept reappearing after some public cleaning events and the locals had to clean the place all the time. It’s a no-brainer that we should keep the place clean wherever we go, and practice ‘leave-no-trace’ when in nature.
Batu Bertenggek Waterfall Trailhead & Parking
There is a limited space to park your vehicle by the side of the road here, about 80 meters from the trailhead. We went on a weekday so it was empty, but it would be full on weekends. If this spot is full, you would have to park at Kerling Hot Spring, 850 meters away from Batu Bertenggek waterfall trailhead. Photos of the hot spring at the end of this post.
10.37am: Entering Batu Bertenggek waterfall trailhead, a bridge crossing a stream.
(+4)10.41am: Simple but clear signages to the waterfall.
(+10)10.51am: Passing by a mini waterfall.
(+7)10.58am: A signage on the wide track shows the junction into the forest trail to reach Batu Bertenggek waterfall.
Air Terjun Batu Bertenggek Jungle Trail
(+2)11am
(+3)11.03am: The trail descents down to the river (Sungai Kerling Kecil).
(+4)11.07am: Arrived at the river called Jeram Batu Bertenggek. This looks like a good camping spot but please make sure to keep the place tidy and not to block or to cause inconvenience to other hikers.
11.13am: We began heading towards the waterfall by moving upstream along the river.
(+3)11.16am
(+3)11.19am: A nice pool upstream.
There were many male Rajah Brooke’s Birdwing Butterflies puddling at a spot next to the river. These large black and metallic green butterflies are a national icon in Malaysia. I even saw some of the butterflies peed, a lot!
(+15)11.34am: There is some uphill climbing over the rocky river path while passing by some small waterfalls / rapids.
(+3)11.37am: At the top, the tall vertical drop of Batu Bertenggek Falls is finally in sight! At the base of the waterfall is the perched rock, which gave Air Terjun Batu Bertenggek (Perched Rock Waterfall) its name.
(+2)11.39am: Closer look at the base pass the perched rock. Please be aware that the pool at the base could be very deep, albeit having a submerged big rock in the middle as a platform.
Beyond Batu Bertenggek Falls Track
11.57am: Rain started to pour, so we decided to leave the waterfall area just in case a water surge (kepala air) might happen. We headed up the same way back to the junction at the wide track. We decided to explore further ahead of the track as it looked like it’s connected to the river upstream with some points of interest.
(+12)12.09pm: As a result, we found some nice river spots up the track. There were also some constructions going on (bungalow? homestay?).
Kerling Hot Spring (Kolam Air Panas Kerling)
We also took a look at the nearby Kerling Hot Spring. The hot pool is a man-made pool, fed by a natural hot spring. The place looked kinda rundown but the surrounding river is still pretty nice.
