Not to be confused with Bukit Botak in Puncak Alam, there is also another Botak (Malay word for bald) Hill in Sabah with various names. Some also call it Bukit Gundul (Indonesian word for bald) or Bukit Gentisan (name of the nearby village).
Bukit Gundul / Botak / Gentisan Hiking Guide
Here’s the trailhead / starting point to the hill.
The ‘bald’ surface of the starting trail.
Within 5 minutes of hiking, there’s this little vantage point for the road below.
In another 3 minutes, you’ll reach this area with some DIY benches and swings. There were also vendors selling drinks here.
Continuing the trail ahead with bushes by the sides.
Some slopes and flats that wouldn’t be very difficult to hike.
Sidetrack
At a point, there’s a sidetrack to a viewpoint.
The sidetrack heads slightly downhill to the viewpoint.
A wooden structure is built here to view the surroundings.
Turning back to the main path to the peak…
Just follow the trail over the hills.
Bukit Botak Peak
And soon, you’ll reach the peak of Bukit Botak. The journey would take about 40 minutes to the peak.
Good to know that the peak wasn’t actually ‘bald’.
Unlike the Bukit Botak of West Malaysia, Bukit Botak Sabah is a bushy hill.
On the West side, you’ll see oil refineries below, the ocean, and some islands including Gaya Island.
On the East side, there’s a lake and the town. You may even be able to view Mount Kinabalu on a day with clear sky.
