Lake Taupo, a crater lake almost the size of Singapore, is the largest (by surface area) lake in New Zealand. This gigantic lake was created by a supervolcano that erupted around 25,600 years ago.
(Mount Ngauruhoe, aka “Mount Doom”, and Mount Ruapehu can be seen at the opposite side of the great Lake Taupo)
While many attractions in Taupo involve some kind of water activities on the lake, such as trout-fishing and water skiing, there are also interesting must-visits around Taupo.
Huka Falls
Witness the powerful display of Huka Falls, as 220,000 liters of water rush out from Lake Taupo into the Waikato River (New Zealand’s longest river) every second!
Getting there is easy and it’s a quick walk from Huka Falls Carpark to the Huka Falls Bridge, where you overlook the massive water current flowing right under your feet.
Walk further down the track for the different amazing vantage points. You’ll also find the 11-meter tall roaring waterfall, crashing down into the turbulent pool.
Check out the video as photos couldn’t really express the power of Huka Falls!
Craters of the Moon, Taupo
Walk around a sci-fi land on earth, surrounded by steaming vents and craters.
Craters of the Moon is a natural geothermal area in Taupo. Walkways have been built to form a loop where you can safely explore and observe the geothermic activities.
Walking through the geothermal land with random steam blowing out of the ground gives a special feeling of appreciation towards nature’s wonders. An admission ticket costs $10 for an adult, $5 for a child, or $25 per family.
