Take a 3.1km hike up to Lake Marian, an alpine lake in a glacier-formed hanging valley. Lake Marian Track takes around 1.5 hours to get to the lake, and around the same time back to the exit.
If you prefer an easy short walk instead, the Lake Marian Falls Track is an excellent short walk (20 minutes return) that shares the beginning section of the longer track, but brings you to the amazing series of gushing waterfalls.
Lake Marian Track Car Park & Trailhead
To reach Lake Marian car park, turn off to Marian Corner from Milford Sound Highway and drive along Hollyford Road to the trailhead. There is a public toilet by the parking area.
9.47am: The track starts with crossing a swing bridge over a river.

Marian Falls
(+2)9.56am: Arrived at the walkway and viewing platform of Marian Falls!
It’s a spectacular creek that flows from the alpine Lake Marian above.
Awesome place to drop by even if you are not hiking further up to the lake.
Marian Falls to Lake Marian Track
(+8)10.04am: Continue on along the waterfalls and the wooden walkway will end and the path becomes a rugged hiking track. Walk up the steep rocky track to start your hike from Marian Falls to Lake Marian.

(+10)10.15am: The track is generally a steady, continuous steep ascent. Take care on how to place your foot on the uneven rocks to avoid spraining the ankles.
(+23)10.38am: Some parts are steeper and narrower at times but nothing too extreme.

The lake forms in an alpine valley surrounded by three mountains. Across the lake, you could see Mount Crosscut. To the left is Mount Christina, and to the right is Mount Lyttle.
This group of hikers were debating if they should take a plunge into the bone-chilling lake.
