Riverside Camping With Mount Kinabalu View

Welcome to Polumpung

After leaving my first campsite in Tegudon Village, I headed to Polumpung Melangkap View Camp Site (PMVCS) to camp for another night, as part of my 30 Days Sabah Trip on a Bike, before heading to Mount Nungkok and Mount Kinabalu.

At first sight, the campsite was more packed compared to my previous campsite in Tegudon.

Just beside is the Panataran River, which flows from Mount Kinabalu.

The river was the best! It’s clean and crystal clear. It wasn’t as wide as the one at Tegudon, but this one was deeper and more enjoyable to ‘swim’. The flow was quite strong, I like to grab a secured rock at the deeper parts facing the current, and let the water drag my body to a vertical position, pretending that I am swimming very fast through the water. The water was cool but not too chilly, just the right ‘coolness’ for perfect enjoyment!

The place was well facilitated. There’s a kitchen (extra charge), some washbasins outside for public use, toilets, outdoor showers and indoor bathrooms. There is also a cafe and a store there.

Unfortunately, it was cloudy on that day, I did not manage to catch a glimpse of the majestic Mount Kinabalu. Also, I had to leave the next day before dawn for my Mount Nungkok hike.

For me, I brought my own hammock and tarp, and they have a couple of hammock stands at the campsite. All I had to pay was only RM6 for the overnight fee! They didn’t have a suitable spot for me to hang the tarp properly, so I just covered the tarp around the hammock. At least it helped blocking the wind and trapping my body heat (the weather around here was cool during the day, slightly chilly in the night but not as cold as Kundasang).

I left my bag of biscuits out on the floor and it got taken away by a stray dog during midnight. Luckily, I was sleeping under a local cherry tree that was fruiting. I woke up with a whole lot of sweet and juicy cherries on the ground! I had three handfuls of these and yet the fruits kept falling down from the tree nonstop that I had to stop and leave the campsite for my climb to Mount Nungkok. (p.s. Don’t simply eat stuff that you are unsure of. I recognized these cherries from my experience.)

A Little Bummer

One thing that I disliked here was the lingering smell of burnt food and old grease at some spots on the ground, even though there was nothing there. This is probably due to the fact that you could set up a firepit anywhere for cooking, the oil and bits of food would drop to the ground, and the rocky grainy ground would absorb the grease and smell of it, with no effective ways to perform a cleanup.
