Signal Hill Observatory Tower – A Short Walk Up The Stairs

Located near Gaya street, Signal Hill Observatory Tower is the highest point in Kota Kinabalu. It is a place visitors like to stop by during the evening to observe the sunset. One can drive straight to the observatory tower, or take a flight of stairs from the bottom to the top.

This is the first and original entrance of the trail (more precisely, the stairs). There are limited parking lots here but you can park further down South after the traffic police station, below the Atkinson Clock Tower.

It was really just a continuous flight of stairs. You could probably call it a trail because it felt foresty. We encountered quite a number of squirrels. Rubber tree seeds fall down occasionally, giving out loud cracking sounds across the forest.

Signal Hill Observatory Tower wooden stairs

Watch your steps! There were two broken wooden planks along the stairs. It is tempting to look around the canopy but it is better to stop while doing so. Make sure you know where you are going to step, especially when going down.

In less than 10 minutes, to our surprise, we reached the end of the trail.

Upon exiting the trail, continue to walk up the road for about 87 meters.

There is also a new trail to go up to the observatory tower. It is located at the back of Backpacker Lodge. The stairs here, which is made of concrete, are in better condition than the first wooden stairs. The exit point, however, is 300 meters away from the observatory tower.
